Taking the Lead on Lead

In response to the alarming rate of lead poisoning in Springfield, Square One will be working with Partners for Heathier Communities on a home visiting initiative designed to identify at-risk families, provide resources to those affected by lead poisoning, and prevent future cases. The Department of Public Health recently announced an award of $49,473 to support this endeavor.

Square One Children and Families have PRIDE in their Work

When Pride Stores approached Square One about a fundraising campaign they wanted to engage in for Square One, both organizations were excited about an opportunity to raise funds and awareness of the work Square One is doing throughout the community.

The locally owned chain of gas stations and convenience stores launched a campaign where customers were encouraged to purchase a “square” for one dollar, in support of the work that Square One does with children and families throughout the region. The paper squares were placed on display at stores throughout the region.

Celebrating Dads

This father engagement video just out from the department of Health and Human Services. The video is being shared nationally to encourage the engagement of fathers. We are extremely proud of this video, not only because it features Children’s Trust and Healthy Families staff, but because it highlights the attention we give and hard work we do to engage fathers. http://www.cantasd.org/bcbh-dads-rock.html

Summer Reading Fun

Summer is no time to take a vacation from reading! Our guest reader program remains in full swing during the summer months.

Thank you to Brian Lawler and Jules Gaudreau III from the Gaudreau Group who recently visited our preschoolers to enjoy storytime.

To join us as a volunteer, please contact Kris Allard at kallard@startatsquareone.org

Leaders in the Community

Jenise Katalina, Assistant Vice President of Family Services at Square One, is currently leading the planning committee for the Maternal Child Health Commission Annual Teen Conference. And the winner is....

SQUARE ONE! Congratulations to Liz Szarkowski, Joni Beck Brewer and the Square One Healthy Families team for earning the 2017 Legislative Advocacy Award! The award was presented by Children’s Trust of Massachusetts.

Harvesting Our Future

Hands-on learning is such fun! Just ask the children enrolled in our School-age Program. They recently planted herbs, fruit and veggies to be enjoyed during the summer and fall months. In preparation for the planting, our staff visited two farms to learn what plants would grow best in our garden. We are anticipating a great harvest! Thank you Linda Lastowski for leading our staff and children in these creative, fun initiatives!

Green and Clean

Who knew that making our own green cleaning products could be so much fun?! Our Square One families learned the health benefits to green cleaning and low cost ways to create their own products. We are thankful to Springfield Healthy Homes and the Pioneer Valley Asthma Coalition for collaborating with Square One to offer this experience to our families.
